Parenting: Teenage Kids and Parties

Parenting: Teenage Kids and Parties – as part of the expert series by GeoBeats. You know, kids misbehave at home because we allow them to misbehave at home, so if this girl is partying too much, I do not know if that means she is engaging in illegal behavior or if she is staying out too late – we need to set different rules. We are the parents, we are in control. Our kids are our responsibility to live at home until they are eighteen, and they need to follow our rules. So if our kids are breaking our rules, it is either because we do not have the rules or because our kids do not think they need to follow them. So we need to explain to our kids, “These are the new rules starting now, and if you break the rule, there will be a consequence.” And then we need to follow through with the consequence. If our children are misbehaving, it is because we are allowing them to misbehave. We can modify that by showing them that good choices get good consequences and bad choices get bad consequences.

Most irritating parenting advice you have ever gotten?

Question:
http://shine.yahoo.com/channel/parenting/the-10-most-irritating-least-helpful-parenting-tips-ever-2448391/

This is pretty funny! I really like the one about “I think your baby is hungry” lol

What was the most irritating parenting advice you have ever gotten?
I think the worst for me is the “your baby is hungry” thing. It kills me. People who don’t even know me were like “I think she’s hungry, you need to feed her” And even now with Rylee being 20 months old, I get this from my mom “She doesn’t eat enough, I think you need to make her eat more” WTF? How do I make a toddler eat more than she wants?
LOL I totally forgot the socks thing!!! Even now, every grandparent that walks into my house fusses because the kids aren’t wearing socks. “Where are your socks?” Probably wherever they took them off…DUH.

Can “Good Parenting” Be Harmful to Children?

Question:
We read new parenting tips practically every day, telling parents what they should or shouldn’t do, how to keep their children happy and healthy, etc.

But a New York Times article explains that, as therapists have been seeing more and more patients enter their office with what they considered to be ideal upbringings, they’re discovering that “good parents” do not adequately prepare children for the real world.

You have to be exposed to pathogens, or your body won’t know how to respond to an attack. Kids also need exposure to discomfort, failure and struggle. I know parents who call up the school to complain if their kid doesn’t get to be in the school play or make the cut for the baseball team. I know of one kid who said that he didn’t like another kid in the carpool, so instead of having their child learn to tolerate the other kid, they offered to drive him to school themselves. By the time they’re teenagers, they have no experience with hardship.

The article concludes that protecting your child from unhappiness could ultimately deprive them of happiness when they’re older.

So what do you think of this?
